Awesome Upgrade!
This review is from: Polar RCX5 Heart Rate Monitor and Computer (Misc.)
Been running 5Ks and sprint tri's through marathons and half-ironman races with my Garmin Forerunner 305 for years now and it served me well. But the RCX5 is AMAZING! Just got it the other day but I am already blown away. I'm a gear nerd so I've been anticipating getting my hands on one for about 6 months now. The display is great, the watch fits well, and the ability to monitor your heart rate on the swim is awesome. I'll let you know if anything should change my current feelings toward the RCX5, but it has been a blast so far. If you are a gear freak or are a hardcore heart rate trainer (I'm both) then this baby is for you!

Just about everything you would hope for and want in a HR monitor

I looked long and hard for a new heart rate monitor upgrade to my Polar RS 200. I wanted a watch that would allow wireless uploading of my workout data, a chest strap that would actively transmit in water, and one that is both Mac and PC compatible. I am an OCD guy that has to do a lot of research before I buy stuff. Until the RCX-5 came out, such a watch did not exist (as far as I know). I did look at all of the Garmin models (their chest straps do not transmit in water!!) and the Suunto's (cool looking but no Mac compatibility, and I don't remember if they transmit in water either). It does all of the above very well. I also love the display. Not only can you see 4 things on one screen, you can have multiple screens (called views on the watch) that you can toggle through. Even better, you can customize every view and decide what data items you want at each position on each view (just like creating your pages of app icons on an iPhone). The polarpersonaltrainer.com website is also a nice site to allow you to be able to see and track your workouts in even more detail. The watch, itself, also looks good (and that is ultimately the most important, right?! :) ), feels good with a relatively low/flat profile, and a nicer than usual rubber strap that is also thinner and has an unusual matte feel. The USB stick works very well too. I have only had mine for two months but have had no problems. If you can afford this watch, buy it! I think it is the best heart rate monitor available for the money!

Not worth the upgrade!
This review is from: Polar RCX5 Heart Rate Monitor and Computer (Misc.)
I work for a company that endorses Polar products. I've used HR monitors for several years and never had any major issues. I've been happy with my Garmin and upgraded to the latest Garmin 610. The problem was that as a triathlete swim mode was not an option. I purchased the RCX5 and have had nothing but problems.
1. After two weeks the USB stick to sync from watch to computer failed. I got a replacement which still didn't work. Finally, on the next replacement it worked.
2. While working out the HR monitor would go in and out and peak at 250 beats down to 40 in a matter of seconds. After working out for 5-10 min, my HR would drop to "zero" even though the strap stayed in place.
3. I followed directions according to the manual and called customer service regarding the loss of HR and the problem still hasn't been resolved.
4. I shipped my product to Polar for repair and they shipped it back "OK" but the watch still doesn't communicate with HR monitor no matter what I do.

What's the point on spending $400 if it just tells time?

I would go back to Garmin because Polar customer service is horrible. One week to respond to an email? (This happened 3x). When I called their 800#, I was on hold for 15 minutes until I could speak to a live person.

Another nice feature I liked with Garmin is that you could control the screen settings to show 1/2/3/4 different modes. On the Polar, it will display four settings (you can customize what it will show, but you can't choose for the display to just show two modes).

Good product. Concern of supplier
I like the product. It does what it says and works OK in the pool (as long as you hold the strap in place during push off).
